What supplements do vegans need?

Would you like to find out more about which food supplements vegans need? Then the Feelgood Shop is the right place for you. Because we give you the answers to questions such as "What happens to the body when you eat a vegan diet?", "What should you eat every day as a vegan?", "Which vitamins are missing from a vegan diet?" or "Which food supplements do vegans need?". You can find out this and much more here ...

Which nutrients do vegan diets tend to lack?

We would like to say one thing right at the start: the decision to go vegan is not the worst - on the contrary. Anyone who has decided to change their diet "to plant-based" will have thought this through carefully. After all, a vegan diet is not only healthy, but also contributes to animal welfare and environmental protection . And these arguments are convincing more and more people. In Germany, the number of vegans has doubled in recentyears1 - around 2% of the population follow a vegan diet.

No wonder that the range of vegan products on offer is also increasing. Incidentally, Germany is number 1 worldwide for new vegan product launches. More and more restaurants are also catering to their vegan guests. Vegan cuisine has long since ceased to be an insider's tip for ecologists living and knitting in communes. Vegan environmental and health awareness is reaching more people than ever before - even die-hard omnivores are increasingly trying a shot of oat milk in their coffee or a tofu schnitzel with mustard.

But one question remains: can a purely plant-based diet meet the body's nutritional requirements? For the most part, yes. Completely, no. A vegan diet can easily lead to a vitamin B12 deficiency, as it is practically non-existent in plant-based foods. Only fermented plant foods such as sauerkraut and beer contain traces of B12. It is therefore not possible to cover the daily requirement of vitamin B12 with a purely plant-based diet. Vegans therefore have no choice but to resort to fortified foods or vitamin B12 supplements to prevent a vitamin B12 deficiency.2

However, other nutrients are also potentially critical nutrients, as it can be difficult to consume them in sufficient quantities. In principle, it is possible to eat a healthy diet without animal-based foods - provided that important nutrients found in meat, fish, milk, etc. are supplied by other suitable foods.

You can find out which nutrients are involved and which vegan foods contain them here:

    • Iron: Legumes, nuts, wholegrain cereals, vegetables such as salsify or spinach
    • Calcium: vegetables such as broccoli or kale, nuts, pulses, tofu, calcium-rich mineral water
    • Iodine: iodized and fluoridated table salt, occasionally: seaweed with a moderate iodine content
    • Omega-3 fatty acids: vegetable oils
    • Protein: pulses, cereals, nuts, oilseeds, potatoes
    • Selenium: Asparagus, cabbage and onion vegetables, mushrooms, Brazil nuts
    • Vitamin B2: pulses, oilseeds, nuts, broccoli
    • Vitamin B12: food supplements and fortified foods
    • Vitamin D: Mushrooms, chanterelles, products fortified with vitamin D
    • Zinc: nuts, wholegrain products, pulses

And there is one more thing to know: We often don't get the same level of vitamins, minerals and co. from today's fruit and vegetables as we used to. However, this is not due to the fruit or vegetables themselves, but because they lose nutrients during storage and the long delivery routes - this affects the sensitive vitamin C, for example.

How does a vegan diet affect the body?

If you opt for a vegan diet - and if it is balanced and rich in nutrients - you can expect positive effects on your health. This is because, in contrast to mixed diets, vegans usually have lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol levels. They also have a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease.

Most vegans also have a lower BMI (body mass index) and are less likely to develop cancer. The good reason for this is that a plant-based diet is low in saturated fats and cholesterol - but high in fiber, vitamin C, magnesium, folate and carotenoids.

However, according to a study3 by the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda (USA), anyone who eats meat is definitely living dangerously. The study revealed a total of nine diseases associated with meat consumption: Cancer, heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease, type 2 diabetes, infections, Alzheimer's disease, kidney disease and liver disease.

However, if you don't eat any animal products at all, your intake of important nutrients may be too low. The German Nutrition Society (DEG) has summarized critical nutrients forvegans4: Vitamin B12, calcium, vitamin D, zinc and long-chain omega-3 fatty acids.

Of all the nutrients, it is vitamin B12 that most vegans lack. Although it can take years for the first symptoms of deficiency to appear, these would then be all the more serious. Years of vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to anemia, cardiovascular disease or neurological damage. According to the German Society of Neurology, the ten most common neurologicaldiseases5 in Germany are

    • Stroke (cerebral infarction)
    • cerebral haemorrhage
    • Craniocerebral trauma (formerly: concussion)
    • Parkinson's disease
    • Multiple sclerosis
    • Meningitis (inflammation of the meninges)
    • epilepsy
    • Headaches, migraines
    • polyneuropathy
    • Brain tumors

Vegans should therefore have their vitamin B12 stores checked regularly by a doctor. It is also recommended to take a high-quality vitamin B12 supplement.

How to choose the right food supplements for a vegan diet

The most important vitamin to supplement for vegans is vitamin B12. Why? Because vitamin B12 is only found in physiologically effective quantities in animal foods: eggs, meat, fish and dairy products. A vegan diet has many advantages - but a sufficient amount of vitamin B12 is not absorbed. An undersupply brings with it the first noticeable symptoms, such as tiredness, exhaustion, problems with nerves and psyche. And if you often catch colds or other infections, a lack of vitamin B12 can also be the cause of this immune deficiency.

To avoid a B12 deficiency, vegan supplements are therefore unavoidable. Our tip: VITAMIN B12 500 mcg chewable tablets. The vegan vitamin B12 ensures:

    • a reduction in tiredness and fatigue
    • for the functioning of the psyche and nerves
    • a normal energy metabolism
    • a functioning immune system
    • normal formation of red blood cells
    • normal homocysteine metabolism
    • a functioning cell division

The MULTI GREEN LIFE capsules are recommended for vegan all-round care - with the comprehensive nutrient formula of natural vital substances: Vitamins, minerals, secondary plant substances, vegetable extracts, fruit extracts, enzymes, omega-3 fatty acids, vital mushrooms, lactobacilli, amino acids, superfoods such as algae, acai, cranberry etc. High-quality green food in vegan capsules - the ideal all-round supply for body and mind, not just for vegans.

How do I know which food supplements I need?

A low nutrient deficiency is usually not noticeable at all or only through very general changes, e.g. paleness or slight feelings of weakness. Most of the time we don't think about the possibility of a nutrient deficiency. But once the nutrient balance is in the cellar, the body will show us or let us feel it. The first typical symptoms of a lack of vitamins, minerals and trace elements are

    • Susceptibility to infections
    • tiredness
    • nervousness
    • dizziness
    • Muscle and bone pain
    • headaches
    • Difficulty concentrating
    • Problems with skin, hair and nails
    • chapped lips
    • Torn corners of the mouth
    • bleeding gums

The symptoms listed here can be warning signs of a nutrient deficiency, but do not necessarily have to be - and are no cause for concern. It is advisable to have a blood sample taken by a doctor to obtain exact nutrient values. This allows a reliable diagnosis of a nutrient deficiency to be made.
