The gut is more than just a digestive tract. It is the largest immune organ in our body and is colonized by billions of bacteria. Around 100,000,000,000,000,000 (100 trillion) bacteria nest on the inner intestinal mucosa and are referred to as "microbial flora". Ilya Metschnikov (Russian immunologist and Nobel Prize winner) claimed as early as the beginning of the 20th century that lactic acid bacteria can suppress putrefactive processes in the intestine. The lactic acid bacteria are protected in the capsule shell against stomach and bile acids so that they arrive undamaged in the intestine and are also protected from the effects of temperature, do not need to be refrigerated and are therefore also suitable for on the go.
