Iodine tablets: for iodine deficiency and for a balanced thyroid function
Iodine deficiency is widespread in many countries, including Germany, due to geological conditions - and often goes unrecognized. The most commonly known connection to the intake of iodine tablets is in connection with the thyroid gland.
Trying to compensate for a deficiency through increased use of iodized salt, iodized convenience products or products of animal origin for which the animals have been fed iodine-supplemented feed is not the healthiest decision.
Our iodine tablets from the Vitactiv brand are natural, vegan and cover 100% of the daily requirement - with iodine from the gently obtained extract of finger kelp, a particularly nutrient-rich seaweed also known as kelp. Buy iodine now without a prescription - pharmacy quality!
What do we need iodine for?
Iodine, as found in our tablets, is an essential trace element, especially for our thyroid gland, as it plays a key role in the production of thyroid hormones.* Around 80% of the iodine we consume through food is used by our thyroid gland.
As is the case with most minerals and vitamins, iodine must also be obtained from food as the body cannot produce it itself. Thousands of years ago, glacial melting washed away large quantities of this trace element, which is so important for us, which is why Germany is still one of the countries in Europe with the lowest iodine levels.
Most of our iodine supply therefore comes from iodized salt, i.e. table salt or table salt (sodium chloride), which is enriched with the trace element iodine. However, it is not advisable to increase your salt consumption in order to absorb more iodine, which is why iodine alternatives can be useful if required.
Possible consequences of iodine deficiency
Permanent iodine deficiency can result in pathological changes or disorders of the thyroid gland, such as an enlarged thyroid gland. This usually manifests itself in a feeling of pressure in the neck and chest area as well as swallowing and breathing difficulties. If you suffer from permanent unnatural weight gain despite normal eating habits, this may indicate an underactive thyroid gland. The metabolism then works more and more slowly so that many nutrients can no longer be converted into energy.
Other symptoms of iodine deficiency can include
- Extreme tiredness and lack of drive
- Concentration problems
- Sensitivity to cold
- Difficulty breathing and swallowing
- Very dry skin
The good news: you can do something about an iodine deficiency. A healthy, balanced diet with iodine-rich foods is helpful. These include, for example, sea fish (cod, haddock, plaice and shrimps), dairy products such as yogurt and cheese, eggs and vegetables such as potatoes or spinach. If you only consume a small amount of this essential trace element, you can also support your diet with our iodine tablets.
Find out more about the thyroid and its function ...
Butterfly-shaped, it nestles against the windpipe below the larynx - our thyroid gland. And without it, our body would go haywire. This is because the thyroid gland influences almost the entire organism: the cardiovascular system, many important metabolic processes, sweat and sebaceous gland production, brain activity and also the psyche.
More precisely, the hard workers are these two thyroid hormones: thyroxine (T4) and the resulting triiodothyronine (T3). A healthy gland produces around 80 to 100 micrograms of T4 and 10 to 50 micrograms of T3 every day. While the trace element iodine significantly supports the production of both hormones, the brain is responsible for controlling when and in what quantity the hormones stored in the thyroid gland are made available to the body. If this complex cycle becomes unbalanced, it can lead to hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. In which case you can take iodine tablets is explained in the next section.
Buying iodine tablets for hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism?
As iodine contributes fundamentally to the normal production of thyroid hormones, without which our thyroid gland cannot function properly, care should always be taken to ensure a balanced iodine supply.
In the case of hypothyroidism , iodine supplements are often prescribed by the doctor as part of the treatment. However, causes other than iodine deficiency can also be responsible for thyroid disease.
In the case of hyperthyroidism such as Graves' disease or Hashimoto's thyroiditis, a chronically inflamed thyroid gland, iodine may exacerbate the symptoms.
It is therefore advisable to have your personal iodine status checked before taking additional iodine supplements. This can be easily determined by means of a urine test, for example. A result below 100 µg/l iodine in the urine indicates a deficiency.
"Miracle worker" algae - the best source of iodine, even in a vegan diet
Without algae, there would be no life on earth. In fact, almost every second oxygen molecule in the atmosphere comes from the photosynthesis of algae. As marine plants can also be cultivated in a resource-saving manner, they could perhaps even be a possible solution to the problem of feeding the world - at least that is what is being actively discussed ...
The iodine for our tablets is extracted from finger kelp (Laminaria digitata), a species of brown algae that is particularly rich in iodine. These large marine algae - also known as kelp - are mainly found in the North Atlantic and in the Baltic and North Seas and together form extensive golden-brown shimmering kelp forests. Due to its rich minerals and other valuable nutrients, Laminaria is also valued in the wellness and cosmetics world - as a moisturizer for the skin.

Does it make sense to take iodine?
It can be useful to take iodine to cover the body's requirements and to counteract deficiency symptoms. Iodine is important for thyroid function and to prevent iodine deficiency diseases. The individual dosage can be discussed with your doctor.
With our iodine tablets from Vitactiv, we have ensured a sensible dosage that covers exactly 100% of the recommended daily requirement. Each tablet contains 150 μg (micrograms) of vegan iodine from algae.
Who should not take iodine?
People who suffer from certain thyroid conditions such as Graves' disease or Hashimoto's thyroiditis should discuss taking iodine supplements with their doctor as it can affect their thyroid function. Pregnant women should also monitor their iodine intake, as a deficiency or excess can pose risks to the unborn child.
What is the difference between iodide and iodine?
Iodine and iodide are two different chemical forms of iodine, a chemical element. The main difference lies in their binding to other elements:
Iodine (I2): This is the pure, elemental form of iodine, consisting of molecules with two iodine atoms.
Iodide (I-): This is the ionic form of iodine, where iodine has taken on an electron to give it a negative charge. Iodide is highly soluble in water.
Our iodine tablets contain iodine from the seaweed Laminaria digitatat. After taking a tablet, the iodine is converted to iodide in the small intestine so that it can then be absorbed into the blood.
