Lactic acid bacteria capsules: probiotics for intimate flora and vaginal mucosa
Dry, burning or itchy mucous membranes in the intimate area are very unpleasant and affect more women than you might think - regardless of age. This can be caused, for example, by the side effects of hormonal contraceptives such as the pill, hormonal fluctuations during the menopause or the consequences of a vaginal fungal infection, but also by an unbalanced pH value without a clearly identifiable cause.
INTIMFLORA PROBIOTIK from Vitactiv has been specially developed for the microbial balance of the vaginal flora and vaginal mucosa.
The holistic complex combines active lactic acid bacteria, which support the intimate flora environment, with prebiotic acacia fiber, cranberry extract and D-mannose. Vitamin B3 (niacin) contributes to normal mucous membranes*.
Build up vaginal flora - the pH value is crucial
Intimate flora refers to the entirety of all microorganisms in the vagina. It's a bit like the intestinal flora in the gut, but for this other area. Here, too, there is a colorful but orderly hustle and bustle that is of the utmost importance.
An acidic pH value, ideally between 3.8 and 4.5, is crucial for the health of the female intimate flora. It prevents potential pathogens such as germs from multiplying and leading to an infection such as vaginal fungus.
Of course, you don't usually know what your pH value is - but you don't have to. This acidic environment is maintained naturally by a large number of lactobacilli in the mucous membrane, which produce lactic acid.
Provided the intimate flora is healthy ...
When the intimate flora environment gets out of balance
There are many possible reasons and factors why the vaginal flora can become unbalanced. These range from diet to hormonal changes, e.g. through contraceptives or during the menopause, to the use of certain medications or drugs.
If, as a result, beneficial lactic acid bacteria are destroyed or no longer produced in sufficient quantities, this can be very unpleasant. It is now important to rebuild the vaginal flora.
Vaginal dryness and pain during sexual intercourse
Pretty much every woman has probably experienced a burning or stinging sensation in the intimate area. However, if this is a persistent condition, it may be a sign that the vagina is generally not sufficiently moisturized by the mucous membranes. This affects both everyday life and the pleasure of lovemaking - due to dryness-related pain during sexual intercourse.
Persistent vaginal dryness during the menopause is also anything but a rarity. This is caused naturally, but nevertheless unpleasantly, by the local estrogen deficiency.
Vaginal fungus - often a recurring "vicious circle"
Fungal infections "like" to occur on the human mucous membranes, as the moist environment provides the ideal breeding ground for fungi. In women, the intimate mucosa is therefore a preferred location for so-called "candidiasis". Drug treatment is usually used to get rid of the annoying vaginal fungus. However, anyone who has been affected once often remains susceptible to it for a long time.
Vaginal thrush is a topic that is not often discussed. Yet millions of women have to deal with fungal infections time and time again. A surprising and alarmingly high number - and that's exactly why we want to talk about it. Because first things first: vaginal fungus has nothing to do with a lack of intimate care or hygiene!
This is how the annoying fungus develops:
According to the latest scientific findings, the cause is quite different: an imbalance in the vaginal microbiome. Building up the intimate flora is therefore the right approach to make a long-term difference. After all, natural protection against infections is only possible if a large number of good bacteria (lactobacilli) can ensure an acidic pH value.
With the active lactic acid bacteria, lactobacilli of different strains, in INTIMFLORA PROBIOTIK you can positively influence the balance of your vaginal microflora and keep it permanently in balance.
Nevertheless, it can be useful to pay attention to two things when it comes to hygiene - especially if you are rather sensitive and prone to complaints:
🛀🏼 Prefer shower gels that are pH-neutral and fragrance-free.
👙 It is better to avoid synthetic materials for your underwear, as synthetic fibers can hardly wick away moisture, which promotes the growth of germs. Natural materials such as cotton underwear are often a good home remedy.
But now we'd like to tell you more about the valuable ingredients in our capsules ...
Lactic acid bacteria and prebiotic acacia fiber
Each capsule (= daily dose) contains 10.5 billion lactic acid bacteria capable of reproduction. That is 130 billion colony-forming units per gram. As each bacterial strain performs a different task and function, it is important that the microbiome has the highest possible diversity of bacterial cultures. Lactobacilli from the gasseri, crispatus and plantarum groups have proven to be particularly effective. INTIMFLORA PROBIOTIK contains precisely these and other strains of different cultures.
A probiotic product is only half as good without prebiotics. The prebiotic acacia fiber is included to stimulate the good bacteria. Instead of the frequently used inulin, we have deliberately opted for prebiotic acacia fiber, as this is a high-quality dietary fiber without fructooligosaccharides and is therefore also well tolerated by people with fructose intolerance or fructose malabsorption.
The enteric-coated capsules ensure that all ingredients pass through the stomach acid undamaged and can be fully utilized.
Probiotics capsules with vitamin B3 for the vaginal mucosa
The prerequisite for the colonization and multiplication of lactic acid bacteria is a good breeding ground: the vaginal mucosa. Preparations for intimate flora should therefore also contain substances that support the mucous membrane. We have combined our Vitactiv probiotics capsules with B3 vitamins, as these effectively contribute to normal mucous membranes*.
The complementary duo: D-mannose and cranberry
D-mannose is a simple sugar that occurs naturally in plant organisms. In nutritional supplements, it is also known as the main ingredient in products for the bladder, as D-mannose prevents E. coli bacteria from adhering to the mucous membrane. The bacteria bind to the D-mannose and are excreted together with the urine.
Incidentally, a so-called "simple sugar" has no calories, as it has nothing at all in common with our usual household sugar.
The perfect complement is the cranberry with its valuable proanthocyanidins (secondary plant substances), which is why D-mannose products are often found in a duo with this vitamin-rich berry. INTIMFLORA scores with a high-quality 40:1 cranberry extract ratio and 50% proanthocyanidins. In contrast to powdered cranberries, the extract contains significantly more of the good nutrients.

What are lactic acid bacteria simply explained?
Lactic acid bacteria are beneficial microorganisms from the order Lactobacillales. They can convert sugar into lactic acid. As a result, they help to ferment and preserve foods such as yoghurt, sauerkraut and kefir. They also occur naturally in the human intestine (intestinal bacteria) and in the vaginal area, where they are important for the microbial balance in both cases. Lactobacilli are often used as probiotics.
Are probiotic capsules useful for the intimate flora?
A connection between the digestive tract and the vaginal flora has long been suspected.
Orally ingested lactic acid-producing bacteria, such as those found in INTIMFLORA PROBIOTIK, have the potential to influence the vaginal mucosa. However, they do not colonize it directly in the same way as the intestinal flora. Current research suggests that the lactobacilli enter the vagina via the perineum - also known as the "perineum" - and the pubic area. When taken prophylactically, i.e. as a preventative measure, studies have shown that the frequency of bacterial infections is reduced.1
Which is better: oral intake or vaginal capsules?
Basically, the decision depends on personal preference, of course, but taking capsules orally is the more comfortable option for many women.
Another advantage is that the lactobacilli - in contrast to direct vaginal capsules - pass through the intestine, which means that a kind of depot can be formed in the intestine for further colonization of the vagina.
Why is INTIMFLORA vegan if it contains lactic acid bacteria?
The active bacteria in our complex are obtained through plant fermentation. By breaking down sugar (glucose or lactose), the bacteria produce lactic acid, which can then provide the desired "acidic" pH value.
These microorganisms are therefore neither of animal origin nor are they cultivated in animal products. Furthermore, we do not use any animal ingredients, which is why INTIMFLORA PROBIOTIK is 100% vegan.
Do lactic acid bacteria have anything to do with milk?
The name lactic acid bacteria, which are sometimes colloquially referred to as milk bacteria, can be somewhat misleading, as these bacteria do not necessarily have anything to do with milk. They are so called because they ferment sugar (e.g. lactose or glucose) into lactic acid (lactate).
Which foods contain lactic acid bacteria?
Lactic acid bacteria are found in many fermented foods and contribute to the shelf life and taste of the food. They are particularly present in dairy products such as yogurt, kefir, buttermilk and certain types of cheese. However, plant-based foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, pickled cucumbers and fermented soybeans (e.g. miso, tempeh) also contain these beneficial bacteria.
What do lactic acid bacteria feed on?
Lactic acid bacteria mainly feed on sugar (carbohydrates). They absorb these sugars from their environment and convert them into lactic acid through lactic acid fermentation.
Typical sugar sources for lactic acid bacteria are
- Lactose (milk sugar) - e.g. in yoghurt or kefir
- Glucose (dextrose) - e.g. in fruit, vegetables, cereals
- Fructose (fruit sugar) - e.g. in honey or fruit
- Sucrose (household sugar) - e.g. in fermented drinks
- Dietary fiber (e.g. inulin or oligosaccharides) - e.g. in vegetables and whole grain products
In our INTIMFLORA probiotics capsules, we use prebiotic acacia fibers as a fiber-rich food source for the lactic acid bacteria. So that the valuable active cultures can multiply well!
What is vaginosis?
Vaginosis is an imbalance in the vaginal flora. Normally, lactic acid bacteria ensure a healthy, slightly acidic environment in the vagina, which keeps harmful germs at bay. In the case of vaginosis, the number of these good bacteria decreases, while other bacteria multiply too much.
Typical signs are increased discharge with an unpleasant odor, sometimes accompanied by slight itching or burning. Vaginosis is often promoted by stress or hormonal changes.
The balance of the vaginal flora can be supported with probiotic lactic acid bacteria.
In which dosage forms can you buy lactic acid bacteria?
Lactic acid bacteria are available in various forms, including capsules, tablets, powder, liquid preparations or lozenges. They are also found in fermented foods such as yogurt or kefir. There are also special suppositories containing the beneficial active cultures, which are also known as vaginal capsules or vaginal tablets.
With our INTIMFLORA PROBIOTIK product from the Vitactiv brand, we offer you enteric-coated, optimally pre-dosed capsules that transport the valuable lactic acid bacteria safely through the stomach so that the valuable nutrients can be fully utilized.
