Sweet and salty treats are lurking around almost every corner and we keep falling for them, even though we are clearly aware that most of them are not exactly good for us. What do bitter substances offer us?

Bitter substances are produced by plants to defend themselves against harmful predators. The bitter taste is unpalatable to them, so they prefer to leave the plant alone. Even for us, a bitter taste takes some getting used to at first, but once we have become accustomed to it, we can take full advantage of these substances.

Even Hippocrates (around 460 BC) and the famous Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) knew how to harness the power of bitter herbs and plants. So it is not a new discovery, but unfortunately this knowledge has been lost over the centuries.

The vital micronutrient choline transports the fatty acids (triglycerides) from the liver to the places needed in the body. If there is a choline deficiency, the metabolic process is disrupted and more fat is stored in the liver. A so-called "fatty liver" can only detoxify the body to a limited extent and can therefore no longer fulfill its functions to a sufficient extent. Choline is therefore essential for maintaining a normal fat metabolism and a functioning liver* - which is precisely why it is an important component of our herbal pots.

Zinc for the metabolism of macronutrients*
