What is ashwagandha?

Have you ever heard the name - ashwagandha? What sounds like an Indian dish with exotic spices or a Hindu teaching when you just listen to it is actually a plant.

Ashwagandha (scientific name: Withania somnifera), also known as sleeping berry, winter cherry or Indian ginseng, is a plant that is mainly found in India, the Middle East and parts of Africa. Botanically, ashwagandha belongs to the nightshade family(Solanaceae) - a genus that also includes tobacco, tomatoes and potatoes.

Where does the melodious name come from?

The name "ashwagandha" comes from Sanskrit, the ancient Indian language, and is made up of two parts: "ashva", which means horse, and "gandha", which can be translated as smell. Put together, ashwagandha can be interpreted as "smell of horse", which refers to the specific smell of the plant's root, which can be reminiscent of horses. In addition, it is believed that the name also reflects the strength and vitalizing effect of the plant, which is metaphorically compared to the strength and vitality of a horse.

The roots of ashwagandha and sometimes the leaves have been used for thousands of years in the traditional Indian science of nature, Ayurveda (Sanskrit: "knowledge of life"). The scarlet berries play no role in human use as they are poisonous. Ashwagandha is often said to have adaptogenic properties, which means that it can help the body to adapt to stress and maintain inner balance.

Effect: What is ashwagandha good for?

According to modern science, the potential health benefits of ashwagandha include

  • Improving stress resistance
  • Supporting normal sleep regulation (e.g. for insomnia or sleep disorders)
  • Increasing cognitive and mental performance
  • Maintaining mental balance
  • Support for vitality and energy

Ashwagandha is also said to contribute to the normal functioning of the cardiovascular system and the plant is also said to have a beauty effect, as it is said to support the normal appearance of the skin.

Biologically active ingredients in ashwagandha

Ashwagandha contains several bioactive compounds, including withanolides, alkaloids (their high content in the berries makes the fruit poisonous), flavonoids and saponins. The best known and at the same time best researched are the withanolides - these are secondary plant substances that occur particularly in the various species of the nightshade family, including the sleeping berry, which gives its name to these plant substances with its Latin species name Withania somnifera.

Ashwagandha also contains numerous vitamins, minerals and trace elements:

  • Vitamin C and B vitamins (e.g. folic acid) in small amounts
  • iron
  • zinc
  • calcium
  • magnesium
  • copper

The exact amounts of these vitamins and minerals may vary depending on the quality of the soil in which the plant was grown.

Side effects of ashwagandha - is there anything to be aware of?

Ashwagandha is very well tolerated by most people. However, if you regularly take medication, it is best to talk to your doctor before buying or taking it.

Interactions with certain medications, such as thyroid medication, sedatives and blood sugar-lowering agents, cannot be ruled out. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take ashwagandha.

What dosage forms are available?

Ashwagandha is available as a dietary supplement in various forms, including capsules, tablets, powders and liquid extracts, which allows flexibility to adapt to your individual needs and preferences. In addition to these dietary supplements, there are also other foods that contain ashwagandha - for example tea or special energy drinks.
