What strengthens memory and concentration?
Regular social contact, intensive, long conversations and joint activities increase mental fitness. This is because new nerve cells are formed in the brain and become interconnected. Friends also lower our stress levels, which strengthens our immune system and provides balance. You can also use relaxation techniques such as autogenic training, tai chi, progressive muscle relaxation, yoga or meditation to minimize stress. Relaxation techniques activate the right hemisphere of your brain, which falls into an alpha state where you are alert, relaxed and intuitively creative.1
Regular exercise such as walking, cycling or swimming ensures good blood circulation in the body, including the brain. If you exercise regularly, you increase your brain power and improve your ability to think and remember.
Learning something new also has a positive effect on the brain. Whether it's a foreign language, cooking or dance class, it's important that you enjoy and are interested in what you're learning.
Typical memory exercises such as Sudoku, crossword puzzles or a brain jogging app also boost your ability to concentrate. Tip: Use waiting times with a round of brain jogging, for example at the checkout in the supermarket, in the waiting room or during train journeys.
In addition to exercise, your brain also needs plenty of water and good nutrients to function properly. For example, blue fruits such as grapes, plums or blueberries, whose colorants, known as anthocyanins, protect the nerve cells in the brain from harmful influences. The colorant fisetin in tomatoes also stimulates the brain cells that are responsible for maintaining long-term memory. The effect is supported by fresh leafy vegetables such as lettuce. Its ingredients promote the transportation and storage of oxygen in the brain. Broccoli provides plenty of iron and calcium, both of which are important for thinking and learning processes.
