If baby happiness is a long time coming ...

... there can be many reasons for this. There are a few important basic rules you can follow to prepare yourself:

  • Is your diet healthy and balanced?
  • Have you cut out alcohol and nicotine?
  • Is your stress level within an acceptable range?
  • Are your folic acid stores full?
  • Are you keeping an eye on ovulation and fertile days?
But what if the latter - ovulation - only occurs sporadically?
Impaired egg maturation can make it considerably more difficult to achieve the desired pregnancy. Such a malfunction of the ovaries is also present in the so-called PCO syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome. Simultaneous occurrence of the cysts in the ovaries that give the condition its name is possible, but not necessarily part of the symptom.
Let's take a closer look ...

Hormone imbalance and its effects

First of all, let's make a note: An irregular cycle is not uncommon. Only very few women get their periods at absolutely regular intervals. Possible causes of irregular periods include external influences such as stress as well as an imbalance in the female hormonal system - i.e. an increase in the production of male hormones (androgens). This can not only make it difficult to achieve a desired pregnancy, but can also affect your general well-being. An increased androgen level is present in PCO syndrome, among other things. With a prevalence of 5 to 10 %, it is the most common hormonal disorder in women of childbearing age.

PCOS can manifest itself in the following symptoms:

  • Increased hair growth on the body (arms, legs, face)
  • "male-typical" hair loss (e.g. receding hairline)
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • skin irritations such as acne
  • persistent tiredness

Women who experience these symptoms are often given the contraceptive pill to alleviate the symptoms, which is supposed to ensure that the body produces fewer male hormones. It's just inconvenient to take a contraceptive when you or a woman actually want to get pregnant ...
As an alternative measure, special dietary supplements for women such as INOSITOL MYO from Vitactiv can help to restore a healthy balance.
These are the natural ingredients:

Myo-inositol - the substance from which cells are made

Inositols are the precursors of the secondary messenger substances of insulin. They are considered to be a vitamin-like substance (also known as "vitamin B8") that can be produced by the body itself from glucose. Inositol is found in food, for example in some types of nuts, green beans, Brussels sprouts and citrus fruits such as grapefruit - but only in combination with phytates. Phytates, in turn, are the salts of phytic acid and can inhibit the absorption of vital minerals such as calcium, iron and zinc if consumed in excess. With the inositol capsules from Vitactiv, you consume 2000 mg of myo-inositol per day without negatively affecting the absorption of minerals.

Inositols are present in practically all cell tissues in the body. They are therefore involved in many functions - above all in the area of fat metabolism and hormone balance. A distinction is made between 9 inositol compounds - the most important in terms of fertility is myo-inositol (MI for short).

**Studies show promising results

In women with polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCO syndrome for short, impaired egg maturation often makes it difficult to get pregnant because ovulation does not occur regularly. According to studies, these women benefit from an improvement in their metabolic profile when taking inositol.1

As early as 2011, a study showed that supplementing with inositol can increase the chances of pregnancy in women with PCOS.2

PCO syndrome is often accompanied by obesity, which is due to peripheral insulin resistance. Inositol can also help here - to prevent gestational diabetes in overweight pregnant women (with and without PCOS) and in women who have a genetic predisposition to type 2 diabetes.3

Folic acid - the "pregnancy vitamin" no. 1

Women who are planning a pregnancy should pay particular attention to their folic acid levels as part of a healthy and balanced diet. Folate, also known as vitamin B9, plays a key role in the division and formation of cells*. It is recommended that you start supplementing your diet with folic acid at least 4 weeks before conception and continue until the end of the first trimester. This is because folic acid is also essential for the growth of maternal tissue during pregnancy and is therefore of great importance for the development of the fetus*.

Zinc - for fertility, cell division and cell protection

The trace element zinc is involved in many processes in the body - e.g. with regard to fertility and reproduction (procreation) as well as the growth of cells and their specialization.* Pregnancy in particular is often regarded as a phase with an increased need for zinc, because an enormous number of cells are formed during this time. For example, the placenta has to form, which supplies the embryo - and later the fetus - with nutrients and oxygen.

Even before cell division occurs, DNA synthesis takes place in the cells. Here too, zinc contributes to a healthy process - as well as to cell protection against external influences (oxidative stress)*.

Vitamin B6 - for hormone balance and blood formation

One of the basic requirements for pregnancy is a balanced hormone balance. Accordingly, it is often women with a hormonal imbalance whose desire to have children unfortunately remains unfulfilled.

The first signs are, for example, cycle disorders. These include too heavy, too light, irregular bleeding and/or spotting. One vitamin that can help is vitamin B6, as it contributes significantly to the regulation of hormonal activity*.

And vitamin B6 is enormously important in another area: in blood formation during pregnancy. During this phase, the amount of blood increases - the liquid part of the blood (blood plasma) is greater than the amount of red blood cells (erythrocytes). As a result, the blood becomes thinner and the hemoglobin level in the blood drops. Haemoglobin is the iron-containing protein complex that makes up the blood pigment in red blood cells.

If the body produces less and less haemoglobin, the haemoglobin level drops accordingly - as do the iron levels. This iron deficiency is called anemia, also known colloquially as "anaemia". Vitamin B6 contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells*.
